I have a bad habit. I read newspapers. Not like one of those back-east four-paper vente ice-chai triple shot soy latte pseudo-intellectuals or anything. But I do like to catch up on what's current, at least according to our little local rag, the TP (such as it is...).
But I really need to cut it out. I mean, it's just SO depressing!
This weekend I learned that there is a 50/50 chance that the North Pole will completely melt this summer. I know that sucks for polar bears, but what about Santa Claus?
The economy is in trouble (shock!) and millions are about to default on their McMansion McMortgages.
Gas prices... well, you know...
With all that floating around in my head it can be kind of tough to be the typical cheery Polyanna that my friends and loved ones expect me to be.
But...
It is amazing what an afternoon in the country can do for a bruised and battered world view. Saturday we loaded up the dogs, hit the Popeye's drive-thru and headed out to a friend's commune in seriously rural Mississippi.
Skinny dipping in a muddy pond
Walks in the woods
Laughing at the pathetic mating rituals of a pack of neutered mongrels, sort of like doggy Gay Pride... (Milo was strangely popular...)
Rat-shaped birthday cake (long story...)
Wind in a pine forest
Raindrops on a tin roof
I'm much better now. Then I just had to go outside this morning and pick up that damn newspaper...
